Researchers wanted to know how whole-body vibration (WBVV) compares directly against conventional resistance training for older adults dealing with sarcopenia โ€” the age-related loss of muscle mass, strength, and physical function. This is a practically important question: resistance training is the gold-standard intervention for sarcopenia, but many older adults cannot safely or practically undertake conventional weight training programmes.

The study was a 12-week randomised controlled trial (RCT). 27 participants with sarcopenia were randomly assigned to either a WBV intervention group (n=14) or a conventional resistance training group (n=13). Both groups underwent structured 12-week programmes, and researchers compared changes in body composition, strength, physical performance, blood biomarkers, and quality of life between the two groups.

The key finding was that both groups improved significantly on most measures from baseline. Where WBV may still have practical value is for people who cannot safely or consistently perform conventional resistance training (due to frailty, pain, or lack of supervision) โ€” for that population, this trial suggests WBV can still produce meaningful within-group improvements on most measures, even though it did not outperform or match resistance training's strength benefit.
