Chronic low back pain is one of the most common reasons for medical consultations and disability worldwide. For many people who experience it, conventional exercise therapy is the most evidence-based non-pharmacological treatment โ but it can be difficult to perform when pain is severe, and some individuals struggle to engage with the voluntary effort that conventional exercise requires.
Researchers wanted to know whether whole-body vibration (WBVV) โ specifically a 12-week structured programme โ could positively affect two key aspects of chronic low back pain: proprioception (the sense of position and movement of the lumbopelvic region, which is consistently impaired in CLBP populations) and pain intensity.
The study was a randomised controlled trial: participants with nonspecific chronic low back pain were randomly assigned to either a WBV intervention group or a control group. The WBV group underwent 12 weeks of structured vibration exercise. Both groups were assessed before and after the programme.
Researchers found positive effects in the WBV group on both proprioception and pain-related parameters. The improvement in lumbopelvic position sense โ the ability to accurately sense the position of the lower back and pelvis โ is particularly notable: impaired proprioception is one of the most consistent neuromuscular findings in chronic back pain populations and is considered a legitimate and important target for rehabilitation.
